This was originally a lecture given by Thoreau in 1851 at the Concord lyceum titled “The Wild” . He revised it before his death and it was included as part of the June 1862 edition of Atlantic Monthly. This essay appears, on the surface, to be simply expounding the qualities of Nature and man’s place therein. Through this medium he not only touches those subjects, but with the implications of such a respect for nature, or lack thereof.

Before political correctness, it was a bachelor's paradise! The Cold War rages on. Like Henry David Thoreau, Robert is living in a cabin in the woods in the middle of a harsh New England winter. His sex-crazed pal Cornelius is responsible for his situation. “Nature” is a short essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson published anonymously in 1836. It is in this essay that the foundation of transcendentalism is put forth, a belief system that espouses a non-traditional appreciation of nature. Recent advances in zoology, botany, and geology confirmed Emerson’s intuitions about the intricate relationships of nature at large. The publication of “Nature” is usually taken to be the watershed moment at which transcendentalism became a major cultural movement. Hen ...

Henry David Thoreau said, “We are constantly being invited to be who we are.” Yet how many of us accept the invitation to show up 100% authentically in our interactions with one another? How often do we feel safe enough to bring our whole selves to a conversation or a relationship? Most of us are held back by limiting beliefs and fear of being misunderstood and not belonging. In a world where people are hiding to stay “safe”, speaking our vulnerable truth is probably the most courageous thin ...
