Welcome to another episode of High Ticket Sales Secrets. Today is going to be a very short episode. I want to share a quick mistake with you that I see a lot of coaches and consultants make especially when they are getting started and they want to get to the next level. And that is, they try to copy what everyone else does.

Copying What Everyone Else Does Can Make or Break Your Business

This one thing can make or break your business. Just because someone is doing very well with, let’s say, Facebook ads, “I should do Facebook ads!” Or someone is doing very well with webinar, “I should do webinar!” Someone is doing well with small events, “I should do small events!” All they can see is the process, the funnel, the certain emails. They just copy what everybody else does. They copy them off, they copy their shit. You can never, ever, ever build a successful and sustainable business that way.

So don’t copy without understanding. I find it even for my students, when they first joined me and when I first started working with them, very often they copy what I do. “Oh, Dan takes his photos a certain way” or “He does this a certain way” or “He writes certain copy this way that I should do the same.” Or “Dan has a podcast. I should do a podcast.” Or “Dan has marketing that way. I should do it that way.”

Don’t Copy Without Understanding

Don’t do that because what works for me may not work for you. That depends on what stage you’re at on your career. So don’t copy without understanding. You have to understand. When you see someone doing something and you see on the very service level and you don’t understand deeply all the intricate details, all the psychology, all the reasons why, all the business models, everything that they’ve done in the past, if you don’t have that understanding, if you don’t have the tactic, the technique, it’s is not going to work for you.
When you try to implement it and it doesn’t work, you get what? Frustrated. You’re like, “Shit. This stuff doesn’t work. Maybe I suck. Maybe he sucks. Maybe this stuff doesn’t work. I should give up.” It’s not about that. It’s because you copied without understanding.

Know Your Advantage and Utilize That

There’s nothing wrong with knowing your competitors, just like in the Art of War. You want to know your enemies. Know the enemies. You want to know what they’re doing, you want to know their competitive research. You want to find out what they’re doing, how they’re advertising, do everything that’s on their list, do all that stuff. But at the end of the day, you want to know exactly who you are – what you know, what are your strengths, what your focus on, what are your unique abilities.

What is your gift? What is the one advantage that you have that you can utilize to your advantage and kick everybody’s ass. That one thing. And then you utilize that. Very often, that when people see what I do, when they come into their mentorship, I share with them that it’s not the big picture. It’s not the stuff that you see on videos. It’s not even the stuff you hear on my podcasts – as good as this damn podcast.

It’s the Little, Intricate Details

It’s not these things. It’s those little, intricate details. It’s those tiny, little details and there are hundreds of them. That’s what’s the difference between someone making $5000 a month as a consultant, versus someone making $50,000 a month as a consultant. And that stuff cannot be taught this way, just so you know. This is not how this is being learned. It’s not how those skills are being transferred but that’s one thing you can understand.

And that’s the problem. Sometimes we watch a video and try to watch certain things and try to understand it and we’re not getting the results. Chances are, they’re watching, they’re learning and observing the knowledge through their own filters. They’re all living in belief. They are not actually getting the lesson.

No different than my students. They listen to what I say and they don’t quite get it, and they don’t quite get it, and they don’t quite get it. And finally when they got it they’re like, “Holy shit.” And once they got it and found that there are many, many levels of understanding, there are many layers to what I do, it’s much, much deeper.

This Podcast is Just the Tip of the Iceberg

From the outside point of view, most people won’t understand. And I don’t try to explain anyway. That’s not my approach. My approach is like the old time Kung Fu master. He works with a small group of people, inner circle, closed door, and I share with them my deepest insights – what I do. You get a glimpse of that through my podcast but it’s a tip of the iceberg. It’s not even funny.

That’s what I’m talking about. Don’t copy without understanding. Do not copy without understanding. You have to know why he or she does what she does the way he or she does it, all those little details and what makes it work. That’s the one thing that can make or break your work in the consulting business.

Until next time. Change your offer, change your life.
