Does the Bible contradict itself when Paul says "it it by grace you have been saved through faith" and James says "a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone?" NO! James is using "justified" to mean "prove" as in "he justified his presence in the office," not as in "the judge justified his innocence." In other words, James is saying that our works justify (prove) our justification (being declared innocent by God through the work and life of Jesus). Can you justify your justification?
