In an effort to address climate change by reducing vehicle emissions, New York City will add electric vehicle charging stations to city-owned parking garages. It’s the first step of a broader plan.

Unveiling four charging plugs for electric vehicles doesn’t sound like much, considering the immediate impacts of climate change the city is already facing. But officials call it an important step toward to getting to carbon neutrality — zero emissions by 2050.

The Department of Transportation plans to install more electric vehicle plugs at all municipal public parking lots and garages, as well as 10,000 curbside charging spots over the next decade.

The city says to meet its climate goals it will need 400,000 vehicle owners to convert to electric cars by the year 2030.
