Cars are beautiful. And elegant. And kind of boring. The modern automobile is at the same time a marvel of engineering and utterly mundane. For their part, the big manufacturers have tried to appeal to a new kind of consumer by adding sleek designs and fancy touchscreens, but so far, few of these have broken from the pack. It’s lead to people clamouring for tech companies to apply the same form/function approach to vehicles as they have to smartphones and computers, privileging the experience above all else.

So this week, the story of the car: where it’s been, and where it’s going.
