Looking at art is often boring, but Tasmania’s controversial MONA – an acronym for the Museum of Old and New Art – changed all that. The brainchild of David Walsh, a mathematician and professional gambler, MONA has subterranean galleries that houses its much talked about art on the banks of the River Derwent not far from Hobart. Opened in 2011, MONA now attracts almost half-a-million Australian and international visitors annually, and has just announced plans to build a hotel and conference centre on the site. At AIME Veronica Matheson caught up with Maria Lurighi, MONA hospitality operations manager.
