There are two guests on the show today, Michelle Kurta and James Bigelow, who are exploring the topic of nonviolent parenting. Nonviolent communication (NVC) is a deep and profound reflective practice, vast and simple at the same time. It’s a practice that can help bring more connection into our world, and to create more peaceful communication.
About today’s guests
Michele has worked as an organizer and advocate for educational justice, with young people in Baltimore and Los Angeles through a journey that includes a deep dive into Jungian and archetypal psychology, and 3 years as a high school teacher in Los Angeles Unified School district. Michele now works as a coach and facilitator of learning about trauma informed practice in schools and classrooms. She firmly believes that the wellbeing and self-awareness of adults who care for and educate young people is essential to developing those same qualities in the children that we serve.
James has worked with children for roughly 17 years and began to introduce nonviolent communication into his work with children about 11 years ago. It remains a central part of the therapeutic work he does in his general practice and life. He has also been politically active for most of his life and holds a practice group called Radical Empathy on Tuesday nights.
