What do you know--turns out getting millions of kids and other students to immediately switch to an all-online educational environment doesn't work so well. We're joined by Derick Varn, high school teacher in SLC, Melisa Crosby, community college teacher in Portland, and my sister Beth, middle school teacher in Raleigh, to share notes about what works and how most things don't when trying to communicate information thru screens. We also get into some education theory and studies about how online learning has an efficacy of maybe 40% of the best of times. - Our previous episode on college education during Covid: https://soundcloud.com/givingthemic/66-college-under-quarantine-ft-ami-sommariva-and-ben-burgis - A useful resource: https://oregonyouthline.org/ The Oregon Youthline gets calls from all over the country. It is ONLY for people 21 and younger. - Check out Derick Varn's podcasts Pop the Left and many more here: https://dietsoap.podomatic.com/ - Episode graphic from Kelly at the Onion: https://www.theonion.com/remote-possibilities-1843704145 - Find us on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/givingthemic - Questions/comments/suggestions for great local Korean food: givingthemic@gmail.com - http://facebook.com/givingthemic/ - - Main theme by The Mysterious Breakfast'r Cereal on SoundCloud @chiptheme - - All items trademarked and copyright their respective owners.
