Atlanta Dream point guard Renee Montgomery was one of the first WNBA players to opt out of the 2020 season to focus on the fight for social justice and equality. On this episode of “The Tuff Juice Podcast,” Renee talks with Caron Butler about why she decided to opt out, the unexpected support she received, the origins of her activism and Black pride, the impact of former teammate Maya Moore walking away from basketball in the prime of her Hall of Fame career to focus on reforming the criminal justice system, fundraising for historically black colleges and universities, the importance of celebrating wins in the larger fight against racism, Dream co-owner and Senator Kelly Loeffler’s anti-BLM stance, the response from Minnesota Lynx ownership and management when police walked out on the team for wearing Black Lives Matters shirts in 2016, and much more.
