John 14:8-9

Reflect

Philip speaks, not only for himself, not only for the twelve disciples, but for you and for me when he says, “Show us the Father, show us God, and we will be satisfied.”

All this time together with Jesus and you don’t know God? Were you there when the lame man at the pool stood and walked? Were you there when the blind man saw his family for the first time? Were you there when the centurion’s son left his sickbed? Were you there when the hungry crowd was fed? Were you there when Lazarus was restored to his grieving sisters?

Philip could answer, “Yes, I was there, and I believe in miracles, but I want something more; I want to experience God.”

So, Jesus took a towel, tied it around his waist, and in a basin of water washed their feet. But Philip says, “No, not this. Just show us God.”

So Jesus took up a cross and as he walked up to Golgotha, he turned to Philip, to the Twelve, and to all of us, and said, “Have I been with you all this time and you still don’t understand? Whoever has seen me has seen God.”

Jesus is healing, feeding, caring, serving, dying. This is who God is.

Jesus has shown us God in order to show us ourselves as believers. To be a Jesus follower, you see God in the healing, feeding, caring, serving, dying life of Jesus.

What does this mean for us? To know God is to carry out the assignment of living out the character of God. It is not up for debate. If you believe that God is a healing, feeding, caring, serving, dying God, then that is how you will live.

Respond

Throughout the day, consider this question: where will you recognize God?

Look for God in the people you meet today, in the places you find yourself today, and in the situations and circumstances of the day. Notice the people around you, the expressions on their faces and their interactions.

Return

At the end of the day, return to reflect upon the scripture and your interactions of the day.

  • In whom did you see or experience God today?
Pray

O God, thank you for opening my eyes to see you in the people around me today. Thank you for opening my heart and mind to receive and understand your love in the places I encountered your presence. I am especially grateful that you are helping me become more who you created me to be each day. Help me focus my eyes more upon Jesus, so I may recognize you more often in the people I meet along the way. Amen.
