[Ep. 177] How To Live WITH Trauma w/ Britt Piper
Manage episode 389987937 series 2877633
On today's episode Luis speaks with Britt Piper, sexual violence survivor and educator.
Britt shares about how she was sexually assaulted in college by a “good samaritan” who offered to help her with a flat tire. The event left her traumatized, and the emotional exhaustion of the trial, and repetitively rescheduled hearings, were re-traumatizing. She had expected to feel better after he was jailed, but nothing was “healed” or “went back to normal” afterwards.
Her own coping mechanisms and emotional dysregulation landed her in a jail cell six months later. When she went before the judge, she was imparted wisdom that triggered a moment of clarity: "you need to learn to live *with* your trauma." Rather than something to "get over" or avoid, her emotions, and the experience, became something for her to learn to relate with.
Over time, she has continued to grow her capacity, both for her emotions and her work. She has continued to speak publicly, and has also become a trauma-informed coach and practitioner.
