Text: Mark 2:6-12 (ESV)

6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

THE QUESTIONING IN THE HEARTS

The healing of the leper in the synagogue has marvelled everyone except the scribes. They were sitting and watching, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Unlike the four friends with strong faith, they were adamant in unbelief. Their hardened hearts led them to discredit Jesus as a liar and blasphemer. The real problem is their hearts are "evil."[Mat 9:4]

Jesus saw their questioning hearts. Jesus addressed their problems by asking questions. “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?” If Jesus can command the obvious miracle of healing a paralytic so that he can walk, before their eyes, what right have the scribes to discredit His authority to declare that the man's sins are forgiven, a situation which only God can see?

Thus, Jesus had asserted by saying, “But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” Later, Jesus declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”[Mat 28:18]

Jesus' words are authoritative. In front of their eyes, He said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” He rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all. Hence, they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” May we will continue to be amazed by the words and works of Jesus, not to question in our hearts.
