Mary Cavaliere has had a varied career that is now come full circle. She worked for Arthur Anderson as a change consultant, took time off to raise her children and now she is making people aware of the chemicals they use on their bodies so each person can live a healthier life. Since awareness is the first stage of change she has now come full circle.

Sunscreen. That is what set Mary on her quest to make sure what she and her family were putting on their bodies was as healthy as what she fed them. One day at a little league game a parent asked what sunscreen Mary was using on her children. “What?”, Mary responded. The parent said “not all sunscreens are safe”. The following spring, before Mary purchased the supply of sunscreen, she started researching the ingredients, what she found was eye popping, lots of chemicals.

First, skin is your largest organ. Secondly, what you put on your body goes into your body. One of the best examples of this is the nicotine patch. While what we eat travels through the liver, which can intercept toxins, the skin has no such mechanism. So it is important to understand what we are applying to our bodies. Research is time consuming, however, there are databases available that describe the toxicity of products people use every day.

The European Union bans or restricts over 1300 toxic ingredients while the US bans or restricts only 13. There are products sold in both the US and Europe that are called the same thing, however, they have completely different ingredient lists. The US ingredients being much more chemically based. The word “organic” is the only federally regulated word. Other words like “safe”, “natural”, and “non-toxic” are just marketing terms.

Mary’s biggest job today is creating awareness about the products we all are using without knowing their ingredients and the effects on our health. Anecdotal evidence exists where people have had asthma symptoms reduced or eliminated due to the use on non-toxic products. One parent noticed a distinct change in her child’s behavior after the burning of a candle with Red Die #40. When the candle was lit emitting fumes he child was very hyper-active.

Most people are not aware that there are three areas of your body where almost 100% of what you put on your body will go in your body. Those areas are the scalp, underarm and groin area. This is important to know since there are lymph nodes under your arms and around your groin. Knowing what you are applying to your body is critical. Many deodorants have aluminum which is very toxic and there are no regulations that prevent that ingredient from being in personal care products.

Research is the most important part of the selection process and it can be time consuming. Reading ingredient labels on product is the first step. Then going to reference websites will enable people to do their own investigation. Below are some good resources to start with:

  1. David Suzuki Foundation
  2. Body Unburdened
  3. Frangrance Stinks

On the ingredient labels the most important things to avoid are anything that says:

Fragrance: this has nothing to do with smell it is a catch all phrase that allows manufacturers to put in chemicals that they do not have to declare. In some cases one chemical is triclosan which is registered as a pesticide and found in anti-bacterial soap. Triclosan has been banned in Minnesota.

Parabens: you want products that are paraben free.

Any petroleum based product.
