Hello and welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you’ll be hearing from Irish stand-up comedian Mel Kelly.
We kick off the interview speaking about where in Dublin Mel’s from and the purely coincidental parallels of his career starting in the beerhalles of Munich just like a certain famous Austrian.
We speak about Mel’s new home in Germany, what he loves about the city and how it compares to Dublin. Mel give some comedy advice then and goes into how he prepares his sets for when he’s performing in front of crowds that aren’t fluent English speakers.
Octoberfest gets a mention and sure, we couldn’t have a podcast about a comedian in Germany and not mention David Hasselhoff.
We speak about our shared experiences as being Irish migrants and how making new friends in a new country can be difficult at the start.
We speak about Mel being interviewed as well for German TV thanks to the launch of his book, Born In Ireland, Made in Germany.
Mel then explains how he crafts jokes for a German audience, I won’t give it away here but it’s a good thing to keep in mind when taking on national stereotypes.
We speak about The Comedy Club, Munich and Mel’s role in how it was established and how it’s run.
Finally then Mel speaks about the process of writing his book Born in Ireland, Made in Germany.
