Pearl Lam’s life is a work of art itself, a singular fusion of East and West cultures. Born in an English colony, she went to Shanghai for the first time in 1992 and it is there she “became Chinese.” Truly a unique personality, Pearl bemoans China’s turn from “one of the most fascinating places in the world where there was a surprise around every corner,” to the “new Modernity” in which communication between China and the West has been lost in translation. Despite all the contradictions, Pearl has become one of the leading taste makers and dealers in the contemporary Chinese are scene.

In this podcast, recorded in the Sky Lounge at Upper House in Hong Kong, you’ll see China through the eyes of an of-the-moment visionary whose fast-moving conversation can be exotically charming.

Pearl Lam Biography

Pearl is the founder and owner of Pearl Lam Galleries, which is a driving force within Asia's contemporary art scene. With over 20 years of experience exhibiting Asian and Western art and design, it is one of the leading and most established contemporary art galleries in Asia. The Galleries comprises four galleries in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Pearl plays an important role as a bridge between the art worlds of the East and the West. Her business philosophy reflects a desire to stimulate international dialogue on Chinese, Asian and Western contemporary art. To this end, Pearl Lam Galleries has not only helped introduce many Asian artists to the West, but has also presented the works of giants of Western art history to audiences in Asia.
The Galleries represent an increasingly influential roster of contemporary artists, including Chinese artists Zhu Jinshi and Su Xiaobai and Qiu Deshu. It has also introduced leading international artists, such as Jenny Holzer, Leonardo Drew, Carlos Rolón/Dzine and Yinka Shonibare MBE, to markets in the region, providing opportunities for new audiences in Asia to encounter their work.
Pearl is also a patron of the arts in a personal capacity. She founded the China Art Foundation (http://www.thechinaartfoundation.com) in 2008. It aims to ensure that the current global interest in contemporary Chinese art and culture is sustainable. The Foundation also aims to facilitate an exchange of knowledge and understanding between China and the rest of the world in the arenas of art and culture. The Foundation’s advisory board includes the Directors of the Pompidou and Guggenheim museums.
