The Dog Show #378 - May 25, 2016 Guest: Bronwen Dickey, author of "Pit Bull: The Battle Over an American Icon". This book offers a much needed opportunity for a balanced and educated conversation about this controversial breed. "Pit Bull" is a good start to understanding the history of the breed and the aspects of human psychology and sociology that play into this challenge. Julie's only complaint about the book is that it doesn't acknowledge that aggression in Pitties, when it is there, is usually toward other dogs, not humans. The book sites dog bite statistics toward people in its defense of the breed, but that is not understanding the nature of the breed. Otherwise, this is an excellent book and a must-read!

Did you imagine running and playing and choosing that for you and your body? Animals teach and invite us to so much! A dog or cat will not hesitate to demand to be petted, feed or let outside. The Dog Show #373 - April 20, 2016 What is the biggest contributor to the canine "overpopulation" problem in this country? Why are so many dogs being euthanized in shelters every DAY? Are there more dogs than there are homes for? How do we stop cruel breeders who keep dogs in unacceptable conditions? You might consider that the answers lie in first understanding dogs as a money-making product. Yes, they are members of our family in the United States, and they are also big business. Today, Julie Forbes talks with Kim Kavin, author of The Dog Merchants: Inside the Big Business of Breeders, Pet Stores, and Rescuers. An educated, balanced look into this extremely important topic. READ THIS BOOK! And visit www.dogmerchants.com to give reviews for breeders and rescue groups you have had experience with: good or bad.

Playful puppies…cuddly kittens…fluffy yellow chicks. What does that bring up for you? Does it invoke an overwhelming urge to take care of one of those playful, cute, cuddly, fluffy critters? When you see an animal that has been mistreated and abandoned are you overcome by an urge to show up and take care of them? Do you perceive an intense judgment rush in around those that created that with the animal? How many people live with the behavior of a pet that doesn’t work for them? Is that behavior truly the pet trying to communicate that something is not working for them either? If things are not working for the pet owner or the pet and they have tried everything they are willing to; would finding the pet a new home shift the behavior? How many of us are willing to truly look at that? Join Suzy and ME, Charlie YesDog, and let have a conversation around “The Seduction Of Caring For Others”

The Dog Show #371 - April 6, 2016 Guest: Erick Eidus, founder of PupPod: Learning System for Dogs. PupPod is designed with the dog's experience as its priority. PupPod teaches dogs using the same basics as clicker training: operant and classical conditioning, and progresses to make itself harder as the game becomes easier for the dog. With the rise of technology in modern society, it really was only a matter of time before we created opportunities for dogs to interact directly with technology. With this development, comes a responsibility to ensure that these opportunities provide constructive interaction in a way that engages the dog's brain and ultimately calms/grounds them. You're going to be impressed by this one!
In this episode you can hear Canine Assistants' founder Jennifer Arnold talk about how she educates, rather than trains, the assistance dogs she provides. It's an approach that is yielding amazing results. In the UK, Bridgnorth, in Shropshire, is bidding to become the most dog friendly town in Britain. Hear what happened when Julie went to investigate.
Generosity…the quality of being noble…noble-mindedness…liberality in giving. Animals are amazing examples of generosity. They freely give their attention, time and energy and do not expect others to show up in any particular way. They also let it be known when they are not willing to be or do something even in the moments where we are making it known we are expecting it/requiring it. I wonder what Charlie and Suzy can invite us to around generosity and what it truly is and what it can create?
