When most of us think about spiritual things, we think of self-improvement, or happiness, or success. Faith should lead to joy and glory. Religion should help us avoid the “bad things” in life. The scriptural witness however, doesn’t support these notions. Instead, Jesus invites Peter to follow to the cross. Peter doesn’t want to go. Psalm 22 b ...…

The story of people written off as having no chance in the Olympics nonetheless winning reminds us of Jesus's choice to be a servant to his disciples. None of us is better than those we serve, and when we choose to serve another, it is a reminder that they are equal in God's eyes, people with stories to share.…

Ever want to have God appear to you in your own, personal, burning bush? Usually, when we talk about “religious experience,” we think about flash shows of divine presence like fiery chariots from heaven, ala Elijah’s assent to heaven (2 Kings 2). We at least think of glorious songs and inspirational worship. At first flush, it seems like the st ...…

When we hear stories about Jesus casting out demons, I’m not sure we know quite what to do with them. Is this possession as illustrated by Hollywood, complete with spinning heads, shaking beds, and evil voices? Or is it just an ancient way of pointing out what they did not understand – mental illness, convulsions or some other such disease? Tho ...…

Jesus's dialogue with Nicodemus in John gives us context to some famous Bible verses. One of those messages to us is to be careful of assuming that those we like and favor can do no bad, and those we dislike can do no good. The world is too complicated to divide into us and them, so we should resist any attempt to use Jesus to do it.…

There are times in our lives when we are leaders and times when we are followers. Today we hear Jesus’ call to two sets of brothers to follow so that Jesus can make them fish for people. That same call comes to us today and each day from Jesus; "Follow me." Hear more about what it means to follow Jesus.…

As Jesus tells the denizens of the Temple that he can build it up in 3 days, we are reminded that the church is the people of God, and that no physical feature is forever. Change makes us wonder why we are here and what we are doing, just as the moneychangers undoubtedly did.

The Evangelist lays out his vision for the only way to understand Jesus: come and see. (note: there was a medical emergency in the church during the sermon)

John's Gospel is all about telling what we see. The corollary is to listen when people tell us what they see. That's different from our disagreements over the implications of what is happening in the world. This is the act of stopping and hearing when people talk about the things that have happened to them.…

We all spend a lot of time trying to make Christmas, merry and bright. In the midst of life’s struggles, pain, failures and darkness, we hope that having an extraordinary tree, extraordinary gifts, extraordinary decorations will fix what ails us. We’re kind of like Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation.” A perfect Christmas w ...…

Jesus's birth always reminds us that in darkness, in places we don't think matter, in the shadows cast by the bright lights to which we are all drawn, there is always a need for illumination. Whether it was Jesus, called in those same fields as David, or the vigilant work of people fighting racism and reminding us that there are people working ...…

The Prologue of John re-tells the story of the Hebrew Bible in short, starting in the way that God created humanity--in community. On Advent 4 AND Christmas Eve, let's remember that we reflect the image of God when we are in community together.

Advent is a season of preparation and anticipation. We are reminded of that in today’s gospel reading as we hear about Mary and the visit from the angel Gabriel. I find there are a whole lot of things that occupy my life as I prepare for Christmas. When asked if I’m ready for Christmas, I don’t think that people are asking me about Jesus, but i ...…

The beautiful words “Comfort, Comfort my people” begin the second part of the book of Isaiah. These words are addressed to people who feel like strangers in a strange land; like the world has been snatched away and replaced; like they don’t even know who they are anymore. Worse, they are pretty sure God no longer can hear their prayers or has a ...…

We often mistake silence and quiet for peace. True peace comes only with reconciliation. Silence and quiet often hide violence being done to those without power, allowing those with power to ignore it. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to reconcile ourselves to the violence we do, and work to bring about God's peace.…

One of the key roadblocks to being who we are meant to be is that dreaded word “fear.” Our world is filled with fear. Today we hear the “Parable of the Talents” which could just as aptly be named the “Parable of the Third Slave.” The third slave had a problem; he feared. Hear his story, our story, and what the Gospel message has to say for you ...…
