The HSE has been giving more details of the cervical smear controversy and have undertaken to inform all of the women involved by the end of the day. Some 162 women, all of whom went on to develop cancer, were never told that a re-emanination of their smear tests showed up abnormalities.

Vicky Phelan, a 43 year old woman who was given incorrect test results and is now terminally ill with cervical cancer settled her High Court action today against a US laboratory for €2.5m. There was no admission of liability and the case against the HSE was struck out.
