The weaving industry in Kyoto originated between the 5th and 6th centuries. The name Nishijin derived from the Nishijin District in Kyoto, where many weavers established their workshops after the end of the Onin War (1467-1477). Nishijin textile features a broad variety of fabrics, such as gold brocade, damask, figured satin, silk gauze and velvet, along with elaborate and florid woven patterns using colorful threads.

Lacquerware techniques were established in Kyoto during the 9th century, on the basis of Chinese techniques introduced from the Tang Dynasty. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the division of labor progressed in the lacquerware industry, which began thriving with the boom in the tea ceremony. Lacquerware products primarily made of wood(Japanese cypress, cedar, horse chestnut etc.) are used as tableware, furniture and tea ceremony utensils.

Nijo Castle was built by the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu, in 1600 as his Kyoto residence and western Japan power base. The massive palace building, now known as Ninomaru Palace, was completed in 1603. It echoes many of the new architectural forms developed in the Momoyama style. The entire building is decorated with exquisite decorations including sliding door paintings, carving, etc.

Tosa Diary, The by KI, no Tsurayuki
 
Ki no Tsurayuki was a Japanese waka poet of the Heian period. In 905, he was one of the poets ordered to compile the "Kokinshu - Collected Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times". He is also one of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals of Japan. The Tosa Diary, written in 935, is considered the major work of Ki. It is an account of his return to the capital Kyoto from Tosa province, where he had served as governor since 930. The journey is by boat, and Ki no Tsurayuki tells about his sea sickn ...

Kyo Yuzen (Yuzen Dyed Fabrics)
 
During the latter half of the 17th century, Yuzensai Miyazaki developed new hand-painting and dyeing techniques, assimilating various dyeing techniques inherited in Kyoto. Hence the name yuzen. The stencil-dyeing technique developed during the early Meiji Period(1868-1912) enabled production of more affordable yuzen fabrics for the general public. Today, using both hand-painting and stencil-dyeing techniques, yuzen retains its primacy in dyed fabrics for kimono.

Kyo Yaki / Kiyomizuyaki(Kyo-ware / Kiyomizu-ware)
 
Although there were potters in Kyoto during the Nara(710-794) and Heian(794-1192) periods, the ceramic industry began thriving here during the Azuchi Momoyama Period(1573-1603). During the subsequent Edo Period(1603-1868), many studios were built here. Kyo-ware, featuring a broad variety of techniques and elegant designs, is widely used as household tableware, ornaments and utensils for tea ceremony and flower arrangement.
