The Thrawn Trilogy (Timothy Zahn)

With the possible exception of Darkhorse’s Dark Empire series, Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire (Thrawn) trilogy of novels popularized the idea of a Star Wars Expanded Universe and, quite frankly, renewed interest in the entire franchise as a whole. It had been a number of years since Return of the Jedi thrilled audiences in theaters and interest in the product was beginning to wane; Enter Heir to the Empire, which released to mass critical and popular appeal. It was in large part due to Zahn’s trilogy that Lucasfilm and other book and comic publishers jumped on the idea of expanding the Star Wars universe. Not only does the Thrawn triology remain one of the best tales to come out of the Expanded Universe, but without it, we probably wouldn’t have a number of other popular stories we’ve come to love. Much respect to Mr. Zahn. If you’ve yet to read this amazing series of books, there’s no better time to track them down. Enjoy.

Big Gizz & Spiker (Swoop Scum)

When you’re in Jabba’s swoop gang, you’re gonna have a reputation. We meet these two sloppy, lovable villains in the Shadows of the Empire graphic novel. You can tell artist Kilian Plunkett really enjoyed drawing them because they found their way into a one off story titled, “The Jabba Tapes.” Both visually captivating and endearing with their hard luck but tough as durasteel personas, Big Gizz and Spiker became one of Team Diabolical’s favorite tandem in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

This Week’s Dope

Chuck’s Dope

The Christmas season is upon us and if you’re looking for a nice stocking stuffer for that Star Wars fan in your life (or yourself), Hasbro’s 6-inch First Order Stormtooper will more than fit the bill. Sporting a ton of advanced articulation, the First Order Trooper continues Hasbro’s stellar craftsmanship with the Black Series of figures. Odds are high that this guy will be in high demand once The Force Awakens is released, so if you happen to see him while strolling down the toy aisle, I’d scoop him up. The perfect addition to anyone’s Star Wars toy collection.

There is a chapter in all of our lives where we wonder about the culture and world around us. Oliver Stone felt this as well and dropped a 10 part documentary on his insight to The Untold History of the United States. Its heavy- I’m not gonna lie, but it gives context on the social and political times of our young country. So if you do take this journey give yourself time to digest it. Cheers.
