Disappointment never cuts as sharply as when it is preceded by the thrill of hope.

The engagement ring returned. The positive pregnancy test mocked by the lack of heartbeat. The promising interview with no follow-up phone call. The cancelled visit of family. The anticipation of a trip not taken. The innocent hope of what you now know will never be.

I keep thinking about the words of “O Holy Night” by Adolphe Adam:

“A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.”

The young Jewish couple. The host of heaven. The shepherds and the wise men. Simeon. Anna. John the Baptist. The disciples and the followers of Jesus. All eventually declaring Him the Christ.

All hanging their hope on the One who had come.

They thought He would deliver them.

Until He was delivered into the hands of His betrayers.

Until their hope hung lifeless on the cursed cross.
