In western China, officials say they are fighting extremism by opening so-called "vocational training centres". But human rights groups argue these are actually mass detention camps, aimed at indoctrination and forcing people to renounce their faith. Up to one million people, mostly Uighurs, are thought to be held, but ethnic Kazakhs are also suffering from the consequences of the crackdown.
