In this episode I’ll talk about

  • Open Skating
  • Sticks and Pucks
  • Team Practice
  • Drop-In Hockey (also called Pick-Up Hockey)
  • League Games
  • Doctor appointment updates

Practice: Open Skating, Sticks and Pucks and Team Practices
Games: Drop in Hockey and League Games

IMPORTANT: After your skates are sharpened, try stopping/turning in both directions while going slow and away from the boards/other people. This is in case you got a bad sharpening, you won’t hurt yourself or someone else.

My observations on each of these:

Open Skating

$4 (Over 55 discount)
Best = In the morning when kid’s are still in school
– Great place to practice for beginners
You are more likely to fall when just starting, so I recommend you wear a helmet (don’t need cage/facemask), elbow pads and gloves. No one is going to make fun of you!
– Great place for long time players to get back into so-so shape before your hockey league starts or if you’re returning from an injury.
– Great place for us long time players to help someone that is new to skating
Learning to skate without a stick is important, because there are times during a game when you may be without your stick.

Sticks & Pucks

$7
Best = In the morning when kid’s are still in school
Must wear a Helmet and Gloves (under 16 must wear all equipment) – Many adults also wear all their equipment (good idea)
Normally there are 2 goals and one goalie.

The nice thing about Sticks & Pucks is that you can set your own pace.

The rink dumps about 30 pucks on the ice, so you can have your own puck if you want.
You can practice skating, stick handling and shooting on your own.

It is also easy to find someone that wants to pass the puck back and forth.

Crowded = 3 goals and one goalie.
If you want to practice on your own, you are limited to skating between the blue lines. So you are only skating on 50’ of ice.
For rink dimensions go to AgelessHockey.com/Rules

This is a great place to practice stick handling with your head up, without having an opponent in your face trying to steal the puck.

This is also a good place to practice dekes on the goalie, like Pavel Datsyuk.

Team Practice

I don’t believe any of our league teams practice together. It would be a good idea, but since this is a fun league, most guys don’t take it seriously enough to pay for more ice time.

Drop In Hockey

$11 (8 AM – 10:20 AM) – Our rink treats us great
Sign up sheet = Limited to 30 players
Players can be 50 years old.

When recovering from an injury, I only skate in the warm up. I get on the ice at 8 AM and skate until the game starts (around 8:45).
Before it gets crowded:
– Practice getting up from the ice.
– I also skate clockwise (turning to the right).

2 minute buzzer to change lines = A lot of ice time playing 1.5 hours.

After the game: coffee and donuts.
– Some guys stick around afterwards and talk for about 1.5 hours. Great time.

League Game

Fall/Winter = 28 games
Cost: $390 + $20 insurance ($15/game)

Spring = 8 games
Cost: $110 + $20 insurance ($16/game)

Sub = $10/game

All games are at the same rink we play Drop in Hockey
– No alcohol is allowed in the locker rooms, because the rink is a city cultural center.

I’m a sub, because the Over 60 League is full (6 teams, 2 lines plus goalie).
– Women and Goalie can be 50
– Draft (Forwards = 1-6, Defense = 1-4, Goalie = not really rated, but put best on weaker team?)
– If a regular player can’t play (sick, hurt, vacation) the team captain will try to contact a player on the sub list with the same rating.

Game:
– We have the same two referee’s every game. They are both over 50 and good.
The ref’s call every off side, but are more lenient when it comes to penalties and icing.
– 50 minutes running clock (No Periods = don’t change ends, to save time). If the score is within 2 goals, the last 2 minutes are stop time.
– If you get 20 minutes in penalty minutes during the season you get a suspension.

– Before I play Drop in or a League game, I do stretches at home.
When I get on the ice I slowly skate around to get my body warmed up, before going faster.

My first league game after a 16 year layoff was tough.
– There isn’t a buzzer to change lines every 2 minutes like we have in Drop in Hockey, so the shifts can be longer.

Update on my doctor appointments since my concussion on May 3

The reason I’m talking about my doctor/testing appointments is so you’ll know what to expect if you ever need to go.

Neurologist
July 6 = Vertigo, Passed all the tests.
Sep 11 = Next appt.

ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Doctor
Aug 23 = Two doctors tried different positions, but I never got dizzy. I also passed all their balancing tests. My left ear had been plugged up for 4 weeks, but they couldn’t see anything wrong.

Michigan Ear InstituteHearing and VNG (dizzy and balance tests)
Aug 29
– Hearing test wasn’t bad.
VNG = Prep: No cigarettes or caffeine 48 hours before testing.
All testing was done on an exam table. Wore goggles (like Virtual Reality glasses) during the entire test.

When the testing was done, I was so dizzy I had to wait 2 hours before I could drive myself home.

My Advice: If you are getting a VNG test, DON’T DRIVE YOURSELF

Neurologist
Sep 11 = Follow up appointment

ENT
Sep 18 = Get the results on my Hearing and VNG testing.

I hope you enjoyed this episode.
