Doesn't expecting the unexpected mean that the unexpected is actually expected?

What’s so funny about this? This joke is a verbal representation of a Mobius band or a drawing by Escher. In both cases you have an infinite loop. A Mobius band is a surface with only one side and only one boundary. It only appears to be two dimensional, but is actually one dimensional. The Mobius strip has the mathematical property of being non-orientable. In other words you never know if you are on top or beneath the band. Likewise Escher’s drawing are impossible to follow with your eyes because as you attempt to follow the path of the figures downward you suddenly realize you are actually at the top or moving upward. Both are optical illusions. The joke is a verbal illusion. The speaker tells us to “expect the unexpected.” Keep in mind that “expect” is a verb and “unexpected” is an adjective. However if you are waiting for something that no one expects, then in reality your expecting it makes it expected. Conversely if you try not to wait or anticipate or expect something that is, by definition expected, your act of non-expectation is, in reality, an act of expectation. This can go on forever because the second you have the intention of acting in a way contrary to something with the characteristics of the opposite, then you are automatically negating it, and vice versa! This makes no sense at all and niether does a Mobius band, an Escher Drawing, or this joke. And THAT’s what’s so funny!

This joke came from Mr. Mikey Bennett
