In recognition of International Homeless Animals’ Day, Lori reviews the progress made in the past few decades to address pet overpopulation and to decrease the killing of healthy dogs and cats in shelters. Fantastic progress has been made, but there still is work to do. Why not take a moment today to think about what you can do to reduce pet overpopulation in the upcoming year?

The show continues with Charlie Richter, US Director of APOPO, an international organization that trains African giant rats to detect land mines. They have programs in the developing world, and the rats operate quickly and cheaply to clear mines from large areas.

It’s International Orangutan Day! These gentle, tree dwelling great apes of Asia are under great threat of extinction due to habitat loss, primarily from palm oil cultivation. Palm oil is now found in many processed foods, so make sure to read your labels, to avoid contributing to the deforestation of natural habitats.

We then report on two new cases of serious infections in people caused by a bacterium from the saliva in healthy dogs and cats, and about a man who was arrested after harassing a bison at Yellowstone.

Finally, Peter attended this year’s SuperZoo convention, and we will be reviewing products he saw at the show and that Peter, Lori and staff have been testing in their laboratory.
