SOULS is a project that music producer David Gledhill began back in the winter of 2011. In the throws of bereavement for his late wife, David found solace in rare field recordings made in 1920's/30s/40s America, of mostly unknown singers. Over the next five years David searched and listened to thousands of these rare recordings trying to find inspiration to build new songs from. The finished album was released in October 2016 and was the completion of David's own emotional journey. Making the record was an obsession, taking five years. But it was also therapy for him. Bringing lost voices back to life for a new generation of listeners to discover. The album's title 'Release' refers to their escape from obscurity but also David's own path back to making music. 'Another Man Done Gone - The SOULS Podcast' chronicles this journey but also provides in depth insight into many of these extraordinary lost voices whose helped save David creatively and emotionally. The Podcast features clips from all 11 songs from the album. Ozella Jones, recorded in Florida State Prison in 1938, provides the haunting vocal for 'Bad Girl' featuring the dark lyric 'I won't be bad no more, judge please don't kill me'. 'I Wait For You' features an unidentified singer recorded somewhere In Mississippi, 1942. Her voice is Billie Holiday-esque. And 'Another Man Done Gone' which opens the album features the extraordinary voice of probably the best known field recording artist of all, the amazing Adell Vera Hall.
