In The Shunned House (Das gemiedene Haus) erzählt Lovecraft lang und breit aus der Historie einer Familie aus Providence. Das Haus, das diese Familie bewohnt, ist offenbar ein ausgemachter Krankheitsherd. Der Erzähler kommt mithilfe seines Onkels der Ursache der mysteriösen Krankheitsfälle auf die Spur – und vernichtet die Brutstätte des Übels. So weit, so gut. Wir wollen nicht verschweigen, dass die Story ihre Längen hat. Auch über den Einstieg – ein Hinweis auf die Anwesenheit E. A. Poes in Providence anno 1848 – lässt sich diskutieren.
