Heartworms kill a great number of dogs every year in the U.S., and 2018 is shaping up to be one of the most active infestations of the disease in years. The American Heartworm Society reports that more than one million dogs in the United States currently have heartworm disease, and the disease is now a serious canine health problem that threatens pets in all 50 states. Renowned dog behaviorist Cesar Millan is teaming up with maker of Heartgard Plus, a heartworm preventative brand, to educate dog owners on how to keep their pets safe from heartworm disease. Says Cesar: “I see many heartworm positive dogs that are surrendered to shelters because their owners aren’t aware of the disease. This is preventable, and I want to educate people about signs, symptoms, and how they can protect their pets.” The Companion Animal Parasite Council predicts an increase in heartworm infections in 2018. Given the trend towards above average temperatures and rainfall, especially in the West, heartworm disease is forecast to increase beyond its endemic range. Key locations of concern include the lower Mississippi Valley, Rocky Mountains, and Westward regions. New England, the Ohio River Valley, the Upper Midwest and Atlantic Coast are likewise predicted to see above normal heartworm cases. Heartworms are spread from animal to animal by mosquitoes. Adult heart worms live in the heart and pulmonary arteries of infected animals. The disease can lead to heart failure, as well as damage to other organs. Signs of heartworm disease can be subtle and difficult to detect until its later stages. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice coughing, difficulty breathing, sluggishness or less energy for exercise in your dog. Heartworm Awareness Month is an education and awareness building initiative to reduce the spread of heartworm disease through prevention and early detection. Cesar can discuss more of the symptoms and treatments of heartworm disease, and also share how he is alerting his followers to disease outbreaks. Cesar Millan is a New York Times best selling author and has been one of the world’s foremost authorities on behavior and rehabilitation for 25 years. He works with non-profit organizations and dog lovers to save millions of dogs around the country in his Nat Geo WILD series Cesar Millan’s Dog Nation. During his nine-season run as host of the hit series Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, he rehabilitated hundreds of aggressive, scared, lazy, compulsive and jealous dogs, as well as the families that were usually in the dark about how their own behavior contributed to their dogs’ quirky traits. Millan's Dog Psychology Center in Southern California serves as a home base for his expanding slate of dog behavior and training courses and clinics, “Training Cesar’s Way.”
