Rachel Louise Snyder’s book, “No Visible Bruises” is a revisioning of the global epidemic of domestic violence. It upends many myths and misunderstandings about what is commonly called “domestic violence.” It explores the ways even the language we use to talk about it doesn’t fully capture its insidiousness.

The 2018 UN Commission on the Status of Women report said that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives. The 2019 report focuses on domestic violence around the globe. A report from the World Health Organization found that women who have experienced physical or sexual intimate partner violence report higher rates of depression, having an abortion and acquiring HIV.

Rachel Louise Snyder is an award winning author and reporter whose work in print appears in The New Yorker, The Atlantic and The New York Times. She has contributed to Marketplace, All Things Considered and This American Life.
