How often should I post on my blogWelcome to podcast #77 everyone! How often should I post on my blog ? How frequently should I post on social media? We get asked these questions a lot so today we are going to delve into what has been working for us lately – consistency being the key!

What did Andrew and Heather learn this week?

Heather came across Thunderclap – a way to create an online flash mob! It works by you promoting your campaign to everyone that you know and them helping to spread it on social media. You set a goal for the number of supporters you want and the system automatically sends out a post via all of them at the same time. We’ve actually put one together ourselves for having epic podcaster John Lee Dumas on our Make It Simple TV show next week – check it out here!

Andrew discovered something that he’s scratching his head over – Google Street View has decided to map the world’s largest yacht from Royal Caribbean Cruises. Is this clever marketing/ product placement? People will check it out for sheer curiosity factor…

How often should I post?

We are having a lot of people approach us expressing how overwhelmed they are looking at the number of times others seem to be posting and feeling that they should be doing the same. To that we say consistency is the key – do what works for you and do it regularly. This way your followers know what to expect from you and you build that trust with them.

Frequency depends on factors such as your market – how much can your market cope with and how often?

Website

We actually like the model of posting once per week on a website. We have found on our own and on client’s sites that not only is this do-able, but it seems to be a sweet spot for bringing in traffic. We have also found that if you have a consistent time of day and day of the week it seems to work better traffic-wise.

Marie Forleo is one example of a once-a-week poster who is doing very well through consistently posting at the same time every week. Ali Brown is another… These are big names online but we’ve found with our own clients who follow this same model from the beginning that consistency has been valuable for them too.

This podcast is an example for us – when we began we were not so consistent, it’s only since committing to doing it every single week that we really noticed a huge boost in followers and downloads.

A word on websites that post multiple times per day – most of these will be bigger sites that actually have a team of content writers behind them. If you are a solo enterprise, do not be put off looking at these! You can still have great success by consistently posting to a schedule that suits you.

Social Media

How many posts are too annoying? How many are just enough? First go back and look at your target market – it will be a matter of testing and measuring what frequency gets you the most engagement for your posts. You should look at factors such as time of day (change this up and test) and whether different times on different days work better.

Remember with Twitter, the newsfeed moves rapidly. There is nothing wrong with tweeting the same tweet out more than once because the chances are people won’t see it more than once. We’ve found that if you can handle doing 6 – 12 tweets per day, this seems to be a good number for rapidly growing followers.

Facebook is interesting – we follow some social media influencers that recommend posting hourly, however, we’ve found that can really get overwhelming! We’ve found more engagement with posting 2 -3 times per day – again this is about knowing your market. Having more heart for fewer posts is probably a factor too! We say start small and scale up as you can, rather than burning out trying to do multiple posts per day right from the beginning.

Final Word

Stick with it! Don’t be put off by comparing yourself to others who are already very successful. Choose the one or two social media platforms that will be best suited to your market and post on those daily, for your blog aim to start out at least weekly posting.

Thanks to all of you who have been sharing your thoughts with us and spreading the love on social media! We love hearing from you all – let us know what you think in the comments below…
