Online Marketing Trends 2015Welcome to podcast 98! Today we’re having a chat about the online marketing trends 2015 has in store. What’s growing? What’s disappearing? What’s staying the same?

What have Heather Porter and Andrew McCauley learnt this week?

Heather has come across a cool little tool via Duct Tape Marketing. The tool is called Process Street and helps you to map out key processes within your business. For example, we have used it to map out what we do with our content marketing. You can also comment backwards and forwards among your team members with each item on your list.

Andrew has noticed that video is becoming more and more popular on Facebook, and with that, many of the videos are actually quite graphic. Facebook have now said that they will warn people about potentially disturbing content.

Online Marketing Trends 2015

Mobile Payments

Some hackers recently cracked into the Facebook Messenger app and discovered that they actually have the functionality in the background to enable online payments. It looks like Facebook are angling to join the highly lucrative online payments market which could mean big things for sales via Facebook pages. If they go ahead with this, they will be joining a list of new mobile payment options, including the new Apple Pay.

This means if you retail products online, you want to be keeping an eye on developments in the payment space – sounds like there will be more options!

Tripwire Marketing

Offering initially low-ticket items to site visitors, then up-selling them into your signature or higher-priced products.

The concept is that it’s easier to get someone to buy a low-priced item first. Another key part is that it allows you to segment groups based on interest. For example, one topic could encompass a number of different problems that different people will be interested in, if you segment them according to interest, you can make sure you send them information they’re interested in.

Social Media Commerce

“Buy Now” buttons were brought out by Facebook and Twitter last year which means that you can sell directly on social media, rather than sending people to a landing page. It’s definitely no longer just about a website – we think that selling directly on social media will only grow.

YouTube Advertising

There is an entry point there now for smaller businesses – retargeting ads. This means that your website visitors could see your ads when they are watching a YouTube video. It’s still quite cheap, with clicks being as low as 12 cents and you are not charged until a visitor has watched for 30 seconds. Our advice – keep it professional looking! Avoid amateur webcam type videos…

Wearable Technology

Apps are getting connected to everything we do! For example fitness apps are huge with data being transferred to mobile phones when you run, or measuring your heart rate etc. This is another area that’s only growing – Apple watch is coming out soon which will allow even more connectivity with the “internet of things”. We’ll probably start seeing this kind of activity popping up in social media feeds too.

Content Marketing

  • The market seems to be getting more flooded with podcasts, so we think it’s going to get harder to get podcasts seen.
  • Content distribution is getting more sophisticated with resources such as Outbrain. Your good content can be shown as related content on other people’s blog posts.

Final Thoughts…

As usual, change in this space is rapid – pay attention! Also keep an eye on mobile technology and how your business can best be optimised…
