Mikkel Thorup is the Director at EscapeArtist.com - the oldest and largest offshore website in the world. He's also the host of The Expat Money Show podcast and author of the book Expat Secrets.

In this episode, Mikkel shares how he was able to travel full-time for 20 years - often with no job, no money, and no plan. He's visited 104 countries in that time and today he helps people pay zero taxes, bank and invest offshore, and acquire second passports or citizenship.

Today's show takes a deep dive into how to achieve and sustain an expat lifestyle, covering Mikkel's trajectory from broke backpacker to successful entrepreneur.

We discuss:

  • How to travel with no money.
  • How to find jobs abroad.
  • How to meet people in foreign countries.
  • The cost-of-living in different countries - including:
    • Rent and food prices
    • Monthly expenses for individuals and families
    • What the expat quality of life is like in places like Abu Dhabi, Guatemala, Australia, and Singapore
    • Why Mikkel ultimately chose to live in Panama and how much he spends per month living there.

We also share our outlooks on why people are leaving the US, where the best places would be to live during the apocalypse, and some of our predictions on the future of work.
