1. participle의 어원: (라틴어 문법에서) a noun-adjective, 명사와 같이 수, 성, 격에 따른 변화를 한다는 점에서, 즉 명사와 특성을 ‘공유’한다는 점에서 붙여짐. 영어에서는 이러한 특성이 적용되지는 않지만, ‘두 품사의 기능을 공유한다’는 점, ‘즉 어느 하나의 품사로 환원해서 설명할 수 없다’는 넓은 취지에서 participle이라고 함. 2. 현재분사와 동명사 –ing의 명사적 기능은 동명사로 그 외 여러 기능은 현재분사로 분류. 3. 분사는 형용사적 기능과 동사적 기능을 함. 어느 정도 선명하게 기능을 나누어 볼 수 있는 경우도 있으나. 복합적인 기능을 하기 때문에 어느 하나의 품사로 환원시켜 설명할 수 없을 때도 있음.
