On this episode of Baseball Outside the Box,

Coach Caliendo interviews Professor Fadde at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale Illinois about his research and computer app for training baseball Pitch Recognition.

They discuss the sports science studies done on picking up the baseball out of the hand and how to train it. What really happens contrary to what we think happens. What the training does to allow you to prepare for games, how it adjusts mechanics, seeing the ball better and earlier. Get an idea that training for pitch recognition begins way before watching the pitcher from the dugout, on deck circle or at home plate. They discuss the importance of implicit learning.

Professor Fadde describes the app that kids, high school, college coaches and professionals are using in the off season and also during the season to continually help improve pitch recognition. The app allows you to see hundreds or even thousands of different pitches and decide pitch type and if a strike. The app gets tougher as you get better. Listen to how pitch recognition works, how you can train for it, implement it in practices and in your personal training.

“Kids are used to being on computers for some things that absolutely do nothing for you in real life and if they can use this fun app to help your brain understand how to recognize pitches then its meaningful” Peter Caliendo, Former USA Baseball National Team Coach

The company specializes in making computer apps to train the perceptual side of sports performance. Not visual skills (like peripheral vision and dynamic tracking acuity) — but rather the ability to pick up cues and use them to make faster-than-possible decisions and actions. Like baseball hitting!
