How might we define gentleness? In the true definition of the word, men can be just as gentle as women. Why? Because gentleness is not about serving cupcakes or learning how to gently pet your new puppy. Jesus called Himself gentle (Matthew 11:28-30) and was Himself described as gentle (Matthew 21:5). In this latter verse, we find the King of kings riding humbly on the foal of a donkey. Yeshua is a powerhouse with myriads of angels at His call. Yet He restrains that power in order to serve. He is the epitome of what it means to be gentle. He came to serve and lay down His life for others. We too have great power but learning to constrain that power for good is our godly goal; to keep our focus on the other in case we might feel superior enough to think that we ourselves might never fall into our own temptations. That is what Galatians teaches us. Gentleness tames the power that we might otherwise use for ourselves and directs it to be used for others. In Galatians 6:1 we are called to restore, in a spirit of gentleness, one who was caught in a trespass. In the Lord’s gentleness, He drew us to recognize our own sin. Likewise, let us be gentle, helping those caught in sin and directing them to the power of God Who can help them overcome it.
