Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about testing options for Lyme and co-infections from DNA Connexions.

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Dr. Leslie Douglas. Dr. Leslie J. Douglas, PhD completed her undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Hawaii at Hilo before attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Genetics and Molecular Biology. Her graduate studies focused on the phylogenetic relationships within and between tephritid species, with a sub-study involving the phylogeny of native Hawaiian avian species. Currently she is the Principal Investigator and Laboratory Manager of DNA Connexions, a Colorado based company focusing on bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic molecular based detection assays. Her main focus is the research and development of a PCR-based Lyme test inclusive of Borrelia burgdorferi and a number of prevalent tick-borne disease co-infections, as well as the ongoing development of various molecular based assays. Dr. Douglas’s research and patient demographics is yielding invaluable data to better understand the relationships between Lyme and other chronic conditions.

Key Takeaways:

- How did the DNA Connexions panel emerge? - What is PCR testing and how is DNA Connexions different? - Why is a direct test better than an indirect test in Lyme? - What is sensitivity and specificity? - How often is the DNA Connexions Lyme panel positive? - How should the test be provoked and the sample collected? - What is the process that the sample goes through once received at the lab? - How long do the results take to receive? - How were the organisms on the current panel chosen? - What organisms are planned to be added to the panel in the future? - Are the organisms identified living or dead? - What is the prevalence observed of the various microbes on the panel? - What is the cost and how is the test ordered? - Can the test be done on a tick? - What testing do they offer in the dental arena?
