Bleep Bulimia Episode 19 with Marcella Raimondo Speaks With Passion On Eating Disorders and Recovery
Manage episode 290218275 series 2880509
What a pleasure to have Marcella as a guest.
It all started for Marcella with her own experience with anorexia as a teen. Upon reading articles on women of colour, she felt that they resonated, and felt "seen and validated" through them.
This compelled her to move forward after her recovery to help others. She is very active in many organizations. She is on the About-Face Board of Founders and a consultant. She is also on the Advisory Board for the Association of Size Health and Diversity (ASDAH), on the Advisory Board of Eating Disorder Recovery Support (EDRS) as Past President. and serves as Co-Chair of the Academy of Eating Disorders Diversity Equity and Inclusion committee.
As her work as a psychologist, when people tell her how hard it is for them to recover, she asks what is important to them. They often explain they want to be connected to themselves, others and a life where they want to enjoy food, and enjoy food to others. She encourages them to hold on to those values.
We touch on Marcella's experience with martial arts and how it relates to her post-recovery. Marcella trains in Kajukenbo at Hand to Hand Kajukenbo Self Defense Center in Oakland. She holds a second degree black belt and enjoys the exploratory path her training gives her. Her recovery and her martial arts training inspire her dedication to multicultural body nurturance and community celebration.
Listen as we speak to diversity, isolation, recovery, relapse, a very sweet story about Finding Nemo, and so much more.
