In 1976 John Hickman put together an outstanding History of Gunsmoke five-part mini-series. Towards the end of part 4, Gunsmoke director Norman Macdonnell spoke about dramatic radio drying up in Los Angeles during the 1950s. When Gunsmoke finally went off the air in 1961, it was the last dramatic network show to originate from Hollywood.
