On January 9th, 1949 NBC debuted the Screen Guild Theater with a radio rendition of John Ford's 1939 film, "Stagecoach." John Wayne and Claire Trevor reprised their screen roles, with Ward Bond joining the radio cast for the evening. NBC's new Sunday evening program aired at 8:30PM. It was created after Edgar Bergen temporarily retired, and Jack Benny left for CBS. Neither NBC nor CBS pulled in the highest ratings during that time slot. ABC's 8PM hour-long quiz show, "Stop the Music," would garner the highest ratings that season.
