On November 11th, 1975 famed singer and emcee Kate Smith was a guest of Chuck Schaden's (full interview here -http://www.speakingofradio.com/interviews/smith-kate/) for a conversation about her life and career. During the course of the conversation, Kate explained how she wound up with her own program on CBS radio during the golden age. In the mid-1940s Kate Smith's Friday evening show on CBS was so popular that in the fall of 1944 her sponsor, General Foods, moved her show to Sunday evenings opposite Jack Benny on NBC after Jack left General Foods for American Tobacco's sponsorship. The short-sighted experiment hurt both shows' ratings and Smith was moved the following season.
