This is a snippet from BW-EP89: The Birth of The Adult Radio Western (1929 - 1945) ——————————— Buck Jones was born Charles Frederick Gebhart in Vincennes, Indiana, on December 12, 1891. At sixteen, he joined the United States Army as a Cavalryman where he was deployed to the Philippines in October 1907. He served in combat and was wounded during the Moro Rebellion. Upon his return to the US he was honorably discharged, but he later reenlisted in order to learn to fly airplanes. After a second honorable discharge, Jones began working as a cowboy on the 101 Ranch near Bliss, Oklahoma. While attending equestrian shows he met a lovely professional horse rider Dell Osborne. Both had very little money, so in 1915 when Jones asked Dell to marry him, the producers of a Wild West Show in which they were working offered to perform the service in public, which they accepted. With Dell pregnant, they moved to Los Angeles. Jones gave up the cowboy life to work in the film industry. Eventually, he worked his way up to $150 per week for the Fox Film Corporation. Company owner William Fox decided to use him as a backup to Tom Mix. This led to his first starring role, The Last Straw, released in 1920.
