In this episode, we have author and teacher, Lanie Goodell. Lanie has an AAS in criminal justice technology, an AAS in psychology, an AA, and a BA in psychology. She is fascinated by the exploration of new subjects, always looking for new and intriguing information. Though her professional history is varied, ranging from teaching to enforcement activities, Lanie channels these experiences into her writing to create a plausible experience for the reader. Lanie has published several novels, novellas, and short stories. She is an avid flash fiction fan and loves the challenge of writing an entire story in just a few words, participating in contests to improve her skill, and having many of her short works published. In her free time, Lanie enjoys concerts with her brother and 5K races with her son and close friends.

Lanie tells us about the five-year in the making (unofficial) world record-breaking 81 Words Flash Fiction Anthology of 1,000 81 word stories one of which is Lanie’s! We go on to discuss what is flash fiction and the challenges of writing in that medium.

Lanie explains how she uses an exercise of being the best bad guy you can to write villains. Yes, it’s as fun as it sounds!

We chat about Lanie’s use of fairy tales and folklore for inspiration and retelling them for a modern audience without losing the impact of the theme and of course giving it a feminist bent. In that vein, Joy wanted to know about her series, Bestienmörder which is influenced by the Brothers Grimm. Brenda reminds us that the late Angela Carter had a talent for setting fairy tales on the head in similar ways to what Lanie does.

We talk about Lanie’s very engaging blog and how she keeps consistent and interesting posts coming. Lanie shares what inspires her and her process.

Lanie also hosts the #MCChat (main character chat) on Twitter every other Tuesday night. Listen to find out what it is, how to participate, and how it can help you in your writing.

Lanie reads to us from her horror novel Salvagium.
