During his first days in office as president, George Washington organized a journey that fundamentally changed how the American people perceived their relationship with the new federal government. Drawing upon his immense popularity, Washington envisioned his ambitious tour of all thirteen states as a way to transform the abstract language of the Constitution into a powerful, highly personal argument for a strong federal union.
