Many said it was because they had been disobedient: being better at following the rules and obeying God (and the priests) would restore the former glory. The prophets, however, articulated the contours of a new reality, one where the abused and oppressed are at the center of the story. “Han,” the feeling of woundedness or brokenness, figures prominently in Isaiah’s writings and those of other prophets looking towards the coming of a new and radically alternative king.
