A Clare Government TD admits the grant for refurbishing vacant properties could move towards a more phased drawdown process. It comes as Department of Housing figures reveal 38 vacant commercial properties have been converted to homes in Clare since 2018. As of the end of June, 403 applications have been made in Clare for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant since its introduction in 2022 and a key criticism of the grant has been that funds are only released once works are completed. Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe says while he thinks the grant has been very successful, some changes could be made to give applicants greater support.
