Show #175 01-08-25 Stewart w/guest Hurley Haywood said to be "The world's most accomplished racer" and 2005 Inductee into the Motorsports Hall of Fame. Stories include his career, various races run, Steve McQueen's "LeMans" movie camera car and an unusual "bird strike". https://theBrumosCollection.com #Porsche
Hurley Haywood talks about his early life and living in Chicago, Boston and Vermont and starting out on motorcycles before his Mom thought they were too dangerous and he bought a Corvette. Soon another legendry driver, Peter Gregg, taught him how to race and convinced him to switch from a Corvette to a Porsche. He put together a business plan for his Dad to invest in his career and soon he was winning races around the world driving a Porsche.
He talks about the time he hit a seagull and it penetrated his windshield and the carcass was half in the car while he was racing and was told to only make a pitstop if the windshield completely broke. He found a guy who owned a Porsche that was in the parking lot and they actually used his windshield to replace the broken one during the race!
You also hear about the time the sponsor Simoniz Car Wash offered him $10,000 to pit stop during an endurance race where he had a big lead so they could clean the car so it looked good when he crossed the finish line.
He talks about the Brumos Porsche Dealerships owned by Peter Gregg and the influence on racing as well as the iconic red, white and blue color scheme on their race cars. Hurley tells stories about the scariest car he ever drove, which was the Porsche 917-10 race car and how he got help driving it from legendary driver Mark Donohue and how it helped him learn and succeed as a driver.
Stewart and Hurley Haywood talk about the differences in endurance racing in the 1970s compared to modern cars with electronic controls that make them much easier to drive for long periods of time. He also talks to Stewart about fame and being famous in the 1970s vs today and how his book and documentary produced by Patrick Dempsey affected his life.
Conversation moves to his 1977 sponsorship with Ecurie Escargot and Team Snail and winning the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1977 with John Graves and Dave Helmick while driving an overnight 8 hour shift.
You even get an amazing story about the door blowing off his Rothman Porsche 956 on the Mulsanne Straight. The new door had no latch so a crew member used his belt to attach the door to the intake, which led to the engine seizing because it deflected a slight amount of air from the original design and burned a piston.
They discuss the Steve McQueen Porsche 917 from the movie Le Mans as well as the Brumos Collection which has the Camera Car from the movie! Hurley talks about his collection of Rolex watches and being an ambassador for Rolex along with Scott Pruett.
