Scott Friedholm is in his third season as head coach of the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have started the season with 11 wins versus 13 losses and are 3-3 thus far in the Big South Conference. The Bulldogs have posted series victories this season against Iona, UMBC and Presbyterian and defeated local rival Western Carolina, 5-3, on March 29.

In his first season at UNCA, Friedholm guided the Bulldogs to a 21-34 record in 2015. That campaign produced several individual superlatives while the offense improved its production by more than 100 runs in just a year, ending the season in the Top 80 among NCAA Division I teams in runs scored. Senior Tommy Houmard was named an All-Big South Conference first-team selection, while fellow senior Hunter Bryant was a second-team selection. The pair, along with senior Nick Schavone, were each named second-team All-State performers by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) as well.

In 2016, the Bulldogs went 16-38. UNCA posted a 3-2 road win over 11th-ranked UNC. The victory over the nationally-ranked Tar Heels marked the first time any UNC Asheville program had bested a team from the University of North Carolina. Asheville also claimed series wins over Mount St. Mary’s, Presbyterian College and Charleston Southern. Since the program started playing baseball in the 1980s, UNCA has never had a winning season but did advance to an NCAA Regional once by virtue of winning the Big South Conference Tournament.

Friedholm was an outstanding player at Providence College. He started his career as a pitching coach at Bryant University before serving as recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at the University of Maine, the Naval Academy and Boston College. As he discusses early in the College Baseball Now podcast, Friedholm has a passion for recruiting and believes he will always have a deep desire to be involved in that aspect of the job.
