With Zlatan Ibrahimovic signing with the LA Galaxy today we examine how he is now considered the exception and not the standard anymore,. The MLS has shifted in how it signs Designated Players. Even though sometimes they will hold on to these classic cases, such as Schweinsteiger and Zlatan but more clubs are now targeting young promising, often south american talent to be able to carry the brunt of the DP load.
What is the Designated Player Rule?
The Designated Player Rule, nicknamed the Beckham Rule, was adopted as part of the salary cap regulations of Major League Soccer for the 2007 season. The rule allows each MLS franchise to sign players that would be considered outside the team’s salary cap (either by offering the player higher wages or by paying a transfer fee for the player), allowing MLS teams to compete for star players in the international soccer market.
Recognizable Designated Players: David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry, Denilson, Tim Cahill, Kaka, Jermaine Jones, David Villa, Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane, Didier Drogba, Andrea Pirlo, Rafa Marquez, Jermaine Defoe, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Sebastian Giovinco, Gio and Johnathan Santos, Josef Martinez, Miguel Almiron, Ezequiel Barco (MLS Record 19yr old) Carlos Vela, Diego Rossi, Dom Dwyer, Paul Arriola, Milton Valenzuela, Albert Rusnak, Jesus Medina.
So have Designated Players been successful?
