We speak to Steve Song (@stevesong) about his Africa Telecoms Infrastructure in 2017 report. We discuss the state of Africa’s telecommunications infrastructures including undersea cables, terrestrial backbone fibre, streaming, wireless technologies, spectrum, and the concept of universal basic internet.Steve has worked for the International Development and Research Centre and the Shuttleworth foundation. He is the Founder of Village Telco, a social enterprise building low-cost WiFi mesh VoIP technologies to deliver affordable voice and Internet in underserviced areas. Steve is currently a Mozilla fellow and also works with the Network Startup Resource Center advocating for shared spectrum policies.
He has also documented much of his experienced and published his research on his blog Many Possibilities, a great resource for those interested in ICT access and development and telecom infrastructures. Steve has meticulously mapped out and regularly updates maps of undersea cables on the continent. He also does a lot of work on spectrum on the continent. He compiles his research annually into his annual Telecoms Infrastructure in Africa report, which we discuss with him today.
