Hey Brothers and Sisters!
We're starting off this show with a blast from my past...The Rocky Fellers - Killer Joe on Scepter Records 1963...this was on the turntable in my household always when my older sister, Janet would have her friends over for "sock hops"! Yeowza….bullet bras and everything!
Set 1 - Come backs & Marbles
Chuck Wiley formerly of The Rock-its with a solo blast from 1965..."Come Back Baby" on Music Center Records / a killer 45 rpm
Foghat follows with "Sara Lee" offa their 1st offering from 1972 on Bearsville Records....basically Foghat is Savoy Brown minus Kim Simmonds and adding Rod Price from Black Cat Bones to sit in the big chair.....
Moby Grape kills it with "Going Nowhere" off of their first LP sans founder Skip Spence / "Grape '69"....Spence tried to part Don Stephenson's & Jerry Miller's hair with an axe so they thought it would be better to "go on without you" like the lyrics to "8:05".
John McLaughlin segues nicely via Buddy Miles bass drum foot with "Marbles" a terrific cut off of "Devotion" from Douglas Records 1970.
Los Miros [The Blackbirds] provide all the bed music for this episode ….'Sonada Amazona" which I think translates as "The song of the Amazon"....they're from Peru and all their records came out either in Peru or Colombia....tough to find.
Set 2: Hobby Horses and Go Go's
Blossom Toes start off the 2nd set with a cover of Richie Havens' great "Just above my hobby horses head"...I'm not sure what Havens was musing about but The Toes covered it on the b-side of "Peace Loving Man" / Marmalade Records 1969.
Richie follows with "Run Shaker Life" off of "Something Else Again"....and again I don't really know what he's talking about. I interviewed RH and found him to be a genuine nice guy....
The Onion Radio News - A broke dad makes his son a playstation in the garage...
Tracy Bonham - Mother mother...her first LP / CD "The Burdens of Being Upright"....wow!
JJ Cale - It's a go go place / Liberty 1965 / 45 rpm. This record sits proudly in my 6000 + 45 collection....I think labelmate Henry Vestine of Canned Heat takes the lead guitar chores...
Bed: Los Miros….see above
Set 3 - Modern Lovers and Mr. Blue
Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers - She cracked / House of Hits 1976. Demos recorded in 1972 and slapped together by John Cale for a killer record.
Talking Heads - Don't worry about the government / Sire 1977 / LP - "77". Do this and you'll be in more trouble than that Wikileaks cat!
Another Onion Radio News....this time its the Weekly News....Prince Charles seizes the government....what a friggin wimp this guy is.
Clear Lilght - Mr Blue / Elektra 1967 / Self titled LP.
Tim Buckley - Once I Was / Elektra 1967 / "Goodby and Hello"
I saw The Light open up for Tim at the Café A-Go-Go when both these records came out.....
Great show.....Lee Underwood played with Buckley and put me in an altered state...and speaking of AS's....The singer in Clear Light was actor Cliff DeYoung who did his best "I'm from LA and I'm tripping ala Jim Morrison on stage"....no real complaints because we weren't on stage but were dosed ourselves......as an aside: one of the 2 drummers they performed with was Dallas Taylor...he's the guy staring out the window on the 1st CSN LP....
L8ter G8ter's.....
